we change the thermostat. import the strawberries. turn on the lights. our biology still notices.

Modern life has become remarkably good at making every month feel the same.
We can eat tomatoes in January and citrus in July. Work beneath bright lights long after sunset. Heat our homes in winter, cool them in summer, exercise indoors and order nearly anything grown anywhere on Earth to arrive at our doorstep tomorrow.
Convenient? Absolutely.
But underneath all that technology is a body shaped by something much older.
Light. Darkness. Temperature. Food. Movement. Season.
Humans didn’t evolve independently of the natural world. We evolved inside it.
And although we’re not bears preparing for hibernation, research increasingly shows that human physiology still responds to environmental rhythms.
Perhaps our bodies haven’t forgotten the seasons. We’ve simply become very good at ignoring them.
We are creatures of light.
Long before clocks existed, light told the body what time it was.
Our circadian system uses environmental light- particularly light entering the eyes- to help synchronize the body’s roughly 24-hour rhythms.
Morning light helps signal daytime. Darkness helps prepare the biological environment for sleep. Melatonin, cortisol, body temperature, alertness and many other physiological processes follow daily patterns influenced by this internal clock.
But there’s another clock operating above that one.
The year.
Day length changes dramatically between winter and summer, particularly farther from the equator. Research suggests humans retain measurable seasonal patterns in areas including sleep, hormones, immune activity and metabolism, although how strongly we experience them varies with geography, lifestyle and individual biology.
We may live by Google Calendar, yet our bodies still receive information from the sky.
Winter was never summer with a sweater.
Nature doesn’t behave identically twelve months of the year.
Trees drop their leaves. Animals alter their behavior. Plants flower, fruit, seed and become dormant.
Historically, humans also encountered enormous seasonal changes in food availability, temperature, daylight and physical activity.
Today, we’ve flattened much of that variation.
This doesn’t mean we should abandon electricity and start living by candlelight in December.
It does suggest something more subtle:
Feeling different throughout the year isn’t necessarily evidence that something is wrong.
Some people notice shifts in energy, appetite, mood or sleep as daylight changes. Seasonal affective disorder is an established clinical condition, while milder seasonal changes can occur without reaching the level of a disorder.
Your December self doesn’t necessarily need to perform exactly like your June self.
That’s a surprisingly liberating thought.
Eat the season you’re standing in.
“Seasonal eating” can sound like wellness language until you remember that, historically, it was simply called eating.
Food appeared when it grew.
Modern agriculture and transportation have changed that- and thankfully so. Reliable year-round access to nutritious food is a tremedous advancement.
But eating seasonally still offers something worthwhile.
Produce harvested closer to its natural growing season can offer exceptional flavor and variety. Rotating fruits and vegetables throughout the year naturally encourages dietary diversity rather than relying on the same handful of foods every week.
Spring might bring asparagus, peas and tender greens.
Summer arrives loudly with tomatoes, berries, stone fruit, melons and herbs.
Autumn gifts us apples, pears, squash and root vegetables.
Winter belongs beautifully to citrus, brassicas, healthy greens and stored roots.
There doesn’t need to be a complicated detoxification theory behind it.
Sometimes eating with nature is simply delicious. And perhaps that’s reason enough.
Your microbiology notices the calendar too.
This is where things get especially interesting.
Researchers studying traditional and rural populations have observed seasonal changes in the composition of the gut microbiome associated with shifts in diet and food availability.
That doesn’t mean everyone needs a “winter microbiome protocol.”
Please don’t give the internet ideas!
But it does reinforce a larger concept: human biology is dynamic.
What we eat changes.
Our environment changes.
Our behavior changes.
The organisms living alongside us respond too.
The body isn’t a machine with one perfect setting we’re supposed to discover and maintain forever.
It’s adaptive.
Temperature is information.
Humans are remarkably skilled at thermoregulation.
When we’re hot, blood vessels near the skin. widen and sweating helps dissipate heat. When we’re cold, blood vessels constrict and the body uses multiple mechanisms to conserve and generate warmth.
Modern climate control means many of us spend much less time experiencing meaningful changes in ambient temperature.
Research into heat exposure, cold exposure and metabolic adaptation is fascinating and continuing to evolve. Sauna bathing, for example, has been associated in observational research with cardiovascular benefits, while scientists continue investigating how different forms of thermal exposure affect human physiology.
But this is another place where wellness culture can outrun the evidence.
You don’t need to turn every temperature into a challenge.
A cold lake can simply be a cold lake. A sauna can simply feel incredible. Not every experience needs a score.
Movement has seasons too.
Your body doesn’t require the same form of movement every day of the year.
Summer naturally invites swimming, hiking, walking later into the evening and being outdoors.
Autumn might mean longer hikes and cooler morning walks.
Winter can shift movement indoors toward strength, mobility or slower practices.
Spring pulls us outside again.
The important physiological principle isn’t that there is one ancient seasonal exercise prescription we’re supposed to recreate.
There isn’t.
It’s that movement can adapt without disappearing.
Consistency doesn’t have to mean sameness.
That applies to far more than exercise.
And then there is the sun.
Our relationship with sunlight has become strangely binary.
Sunlight is essential information for circadian biology and enables vitamin D production in the skin.
Ultraviolet radiation is also a well-established cause of skin aging and skin cancer.
Both statements can exist at the same time.
Holistic thinking should make us more comfortable with nuance, not less.
You can appreciate daylight without intentionally burning your skin.
You can protect yourself from excessive UV exposure without treating the sun like an enemy.
You can go outside in the morning because natural light is valuable.
Nature isn’t automatically harmless.
Nature also isn’t something we’re separate from.
Wisdom tends to live somewhere in the middle of it all.
Maybe seasonality isn’t another protocol.
This is important.
Please don’t turn this into another thing to optimize.
You don’t need a winter supplement stack, spring cleanse, summer bio hack and fall hormone reset simply because someone gave each one beautiful packaging.
Seasonal living can be wonderfully ordinary.
Buy the peaches when they’re extraordinary.
Open the windows when the weather changes.
Notice sunset getting earlier.
Cook something warm when you’re cold.
Walk outside when the morning is beautiful.
Sleep a little longer when your body genuinely needs it.
Change your movement when the weather changes.
Grow herbs on a windowsill.
Visit a farmers market.
Know what’s growing where you live.
Let August feel different from February.
None of this requires rejecting modern life. It simply means allowing nature back into it.
Your body isn’t asking you to go backward.
Modern medicine, refrigeration, artificial light, climate control and global agriculture have dramatically improved human life.
Returning to nature doesn’t require pretending otherwise.
The interesting future of wellness may actually exist at the intersection.
Use the technology.
Understand the science.
Keep natures medicine.
And still remember to look outside.
Because beneath our schedules, screens, climate-controlled rooms and perfectly predictable grocery stores is an organism whose biology was shaped over an incomprehensibly long period of time by sunrise and darkness, heat and cold, abundance and scarcity, movement and rest.
The world changes around us.
We change with it.
Maybe wellness was never supposed to look exactly the same all year.
