The lost art of touch

why the way you apply your skincare may matter just as much as what’s inside the jar

By Shayne Rocha, Rootsy Alchemy Founder & CEO

We live in a world that moves quickly.

We rush through our mornings, scroll while we eat, answer emails before we’ve fully woken up, and often apply our skincare in less than thirty seconds before moving on to the next thing.

Somewhere along the way, touch became another task.

But what if it wasn’t?

What if the simple act of placing your hands on your own skin was doing far more than helping a botanical oil absorb?

Science is beginning to reveal something many traditional healing systems have understood for centuries: intentional touch influences far more than the surface of our skin.

Your Skin is Constantly Communicating

The skin is our largest organ, but it’s also one of our most sophisticated sensory systems. Millions of nerve endings continuously send information to the brain about pressure, temperature, movement, and safety.

Certain gentle touch receptors- known as C-tactile afferents- respond especially well to slow, light, comforting strokes.

Research suggests that activating these specialized nerve fibers may help promote feelings of calm and social connection through the nervous system. Rather than existing solely to detect danger, our skin is also designed to recognize comfort.

Every time we slow down enough to intentionally massage our face, neck, chest, or body, we’re participating in a conversation our nervous system has been waiting to have.

Touch Changes More Than Your Mood

When touch feels safe and intentional, the body can begin shifting away from a constant “fight-or-flight” state and toward the parasympathetic nervous system- the branch responsible for rest, repair, and recovery.

While skincare isn’t a medical treatment for stress, creating moments of calm may support healthier daily habits and a greater sense of wellbeing. Gentle self-massage has also been associated with temporary improvements in circulation and relaxation, making it a meaningful compliment to a skincare ritual.

Suddenly, your evening skincare routine becomes more than a beauty habit.

It becomes a pause.

More Than Absorption

Many people focus exclusively on ingredients.

Vitamin C.

Retinol.

Peptides.

Ceramides.

And while thoughtfully chosen ingredients certainly matter, the experience surrounding them matters too.

Take thirty extra seconds to warm an oil between your palms.

Massage upward instead of rushing.

Notice the temperature of your hands.

Breathe a little slower.

Relax your jaw.

Soften your forehead.

The product hasn’t changed.

But your relationship with it has.

The Body Remembers Gentleness

Modern life asks us to move faster, produce more, and stay constantly connected.

Gentleness often feels unfamiliar.

Yet our bodies respond to consistency, not intensity.

Small rituals repeated every morning and evening become signals of care. Over time, they can transform a routine into a practice- one that reminds us our bodies deserve attention, not just correction.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence.

A Different Definition of Luxury

Luxury has long been defined by exclusivity, rarity, or price.

At Rootsy, we see it differently.

Luxury is having five uninterrupted minutes with yourself.

Luxury is putting your phone down while you apply your skincare.

Luxury is slowing your breath.

Luxury is choosing ingredients with intention- and applying them with the same intention.

In a culture obsessed with doing more, slowing down may be the most luxurious ritual of all.

Bringing Touch Back Into Your Ritual

The next time you reach for your favorite botanical balm or oil, resist the urge to rush.

Instead:

  • Warm the product between your palms before applying.

  • Use slow, gentle strokes rather than quick rubbing.

  • Let your shoulders soften.

  • Unclench your jaw.

  • Take three slow breaths before you finish.

Your skincare routine doesn’t need to become longer.

It simply needs to become more intentional.

Sometimes the most transformative ingredient isn’t hidden inside the jar. Sometimes it’s the hands holding it.

From the apothecary

perhaps the most meaningful rituals aren’t the ones that promise transformation overnight- they’re the ones that quietly remind us we were never something to be fixed.

in a culture that teaches us to constantly improve, optimize, and perfect ourselves, choosing to care for your body with patience can feel almost rebellious.

so the next time your hands meet your skin, don’t ask, “how can i change this?”

ask instead, “how can i care for this?'“

Sometimes the most profound form of wellness begins not with another product or another practice, but with a different question.
