The vaginal microbiome explained
The tiny ecosystem that’s quietly running the show
By Shayne Rocha, Rootsy Alchemy Founder & CEO
For something so small, the vaginal microbiome has an incredible amount of influence over how we feel.
Comfort. Confidence. Intimacy. Even our daily wellbeing.
Yet most women were never taught it existed.
We learned how to wash our face. We learned to moisturize our skin. We learned about gut health and probiotics. But somewhere along the way, one of the most intelligent ecosystems in the female body was left out of the conversation.
At Rootsy, we think it’s time to change that.
Understanding your vaginal microbiome isn’t about becoming an expert in bacteria. It’s about understanding your body a little more deeply- and realizing that it’s been working for you all along.
Think Less “Bacteria.” More “Garden.”
The word bacteria tends to make people cringe.
But here’s the truth:
Not all bacteria are bad.
In fact, some of the most important bacteria you’ll ever have are already living inside of you. Imagine your vaginal microbiome as a thriving garden.
Healthy plants grow together, protecting the soil and keeping weeds from taking over. Everything works in harmony.
Your microbiome functions much the same way.
When beneficial bacteria are abundant, they help create an environment that supports vaginal health and makes it more difficult for many harmful microbes to thrive.
The goal has never been sterility. The goal has always been balance.
Science says:
Research consistently shows that Lactobacillus species dominate the vaginal microbiome in many healthy women and help maintain an acidic environment that supports vaginal health.

Your Body Came With It’s Own Security System
One of the most fascinating things about the vagina is that it’s remarkably self-sufficient.
Beneficial bacteria produce lactic acid, helping maintain a naturally acidic pH.
That acidic environment acts like your body’s own security system- supporting the growth of helpful bacteria while making it harder for many unwanted microbes to flourish.
In other words…
Your body isn’t fragile. It’s brilliantly designed. Most of the time, it knows exactly what it’s doing. Our job isn’t to fight it, it’s to support it.
Why Does Everything Suddenly Feel… Different?
If you’ve ever wondered why your body feels perfectly balanced one month and completely different the next… you’re not imagining it.
Your microbiome is constantly responding to life.
Stress. Sleep. Hormones. Antibiotics. Your menstrual cycle. Pregnancy. Peri/menopause. Travel.
Even spending all afternoon in a wet swimsuit after the lake.
Your body is having an ongoing conversation with your environment.
Sometimes that conversation gets interrupted. Sometimes it simply shifts. Neither means your body has failed. It means it’s responding.
Science says:
The vaginal microbiome is dynamic throughout life and can change with hormone fluctuations, medications, age, and many other environmental influences.

Your Hormones Are Part of the Conversation
Hormones influence far more than mood or your menstrual cycle.
Estrogen helps create conditions that beneficial bacteria prefer.
As estrogen naturally changes throughout life, many women notice shifts in moisture, comfort, elasticity, and even how their body feels day to day.
Perimenopause. Postpartum. Breastfeeding. Menopause.
These aren’t signs that your body is “breaking“. They’re chapters of the same story. Understanding those chapters often replaces fear with compassion.
The Thing We Don’t Talk About Enough…
Stress.
Not the kind that disappears after a good night’s sleep.
The chronic, always-on, mentally overloaded kind.
When your nervous system spends weeks- or months- or years- in survival mode, every other system in your body feels it.
Including your intimate health. The immune system changes. Hormones shift. Sleep suffers. Inflammation can increase. It’s one more reminder that intimate wellness doesn’t begin in the bedroom or with your partner. It begins with the way we live.
Sometimes the most supportive thing you can do for your microbiome isn’t buying another product.
It’s taking a walk. Getting sunlight. Sleeping much longer and allowing your body to naturally wake you rather than your alarm. Breathing deeply enough to remind your body that it’s safe.
Gentle Advice for the Partners Reading This
If you’re here because you wanted to understand your partner better…
First, thank you.
Second…
Imagine tending to a beautiful garden.
You wouldn’t dump random chemicals into it.
You wouldn’t ignore it until something looked wrong.
You’d learn what helps it flourish.
You’d pay close attention to the seasons.
You’d notice when it needed more water. More shade. More time.
The same is true here.
Understanding your partner’s body isn’t about memorizing biology.
It’s so much more about learning to notice. TO ask. To listen. To care.
The Little Things That Make a Big Difference
Healthy microbiomes aren’t built overnight. They’re supported through everyday choices.
That often looks like:
Prioritizing sleep
Managing stress in ways that actually work for you
Eating a varied, fiber and protein-rich, nutrient dense diet
Staying hydrated
Wearing breathable clothing when possible
Avoiding unnecessary harsh cleansers or heavily fragranced products on the vulva
Understanding that antibiotics, hormonal changes, and certain life stages can temporarily shift your body’s balance
Your body whispers long before it shouts. The more familiar you become with its normal rhythms, the easier it becomes to notice when something has changed.
It’s Not About Perfection
Social media has convinced us that wellness means optimizing everything.
Perfect supplements. Perfect routines. Perfect hormones. Perfect diets. Perfect with peptides.
Your body has no interest in perfection.
It wants healthy consistency. Support. Rest. Movement. Nourishment. Trust.
The healthiest ecosystems in nature aren’t perfect. They’re resilient. Your microbiome is no different.
When we stop seeing our bodies as problems to solve and begin seeing them as relationships to nurture, everything changes. Curiosity replaces fear. Knowledge replaces shame. And care becomes something we practice- not just when something feels wrong, but every single day.
That, to us, is intimate wellness.
from the apothecary
One of the greatest misconceptions in modern wellness is that health comes from controlling every part of our body.
Nature teaches us something different.
The healthiest forests aren’t sterile.
The healthiest oceans aren’t empty.
The healthiest gardens aren’t built by removing every microorganism.
They’re built through balance, and your vaginal microbiome is no different.
At Rootsy, we don’t believe in overpowering the body. We believe in supporting what it’s already trying to do.
Choose thoughtful ingredients.
Honor your body’s natural rhythms.
Care for yourself consistently- not perfectly.
The body has an incredible capacity to care for itself when we learn to work with it instead of against it.
Here’s the truth we wish every woman heard growing up:
Your vagina isn’t “high maintenance”
It isn’t “too sensitive”
It isn’t “too complicated”
It’s alive. Responsive. Remarkably intelligent.
For far too long, we’ve been taught to whisper about women’s bodies- as if understanding them somehow made them inappropriate to discuss.
We disagree.
Knowledge isn’t embarrassing. Curiosity isn’t shameful. And understanding your body is one of the most empowering things you’ll ever do.
If this journal leaves you with one thought, let it be this:
Your body has been speaking to you all along. The question isn’t whether it’s communicating. It’s whether we’ve learned to deeply listen.
