Walk down the skincare aisle and you’ll find thousands of products promising softer skin, brighter complexions, and better results.
Turn the bottle over, though, and the ingredient list often tells a different story.
Long names.
Synthetic fragrances.
Fillers.
Ingredients chosen to make a product cheaper, last longer, or feel a certain way- not necessarily because they’re what’s best for your skin.
At Rootsy Alchemy, we believe every ingredient should have a purpose.
Not simply because it’s trending. Not because it’s inexpensive. Not because it contributes something meaningful to the formula.
We don’t formulate around fear. We formulate around intention.
Here are some of the ingredients we choose to leave out- and why.
Synthetic Fragrance
Few things influence how a product feels more than its scent.
But “fragrance” on an ingredient label can represent a complex mixture of many different compounds, and companies generally aren’t required to disclose every component.
For some people, fragrance isn’t a concern. For others- especially those with sensitive skin or intimate skin- it can contribute to irritation.
Rather than masking a formula with heavy perfumes, we prefer the quiet aroma of botanicals themselves.
The result is something softer. More grounded.
A scent that belongs to nature rather than competing with it.
Harsh Sulfates
Cleansing should never come at the expense of your skin barrier.
Some sulfates are highly effective cleansers, but stronger cleansing agents can remove more of the skin’s natural oils than some people tolerate well, especially on delicate or already dry skin. Healthy skin isn’t squeaky clean.
Healthy skin is balanced.
Parabens
Parabens are preservatives that have been widely used in cosmetics for decades and are considered safe by many regulators at approved levels.
At Rootsy, our decision isn’t driven by alarm.
It’s driven by philosophy.
Whenever possible, we choose preservation systems and formulation approaches that align with our commitment to simple, thoughtfully selected ingredients.
For us, ingredient selection is about intentionality- not following convention.
Petroleum-Derived Ingredients
Occlusive ingredients can absolutely have their place in skincare.
But we choose to build our products around nutrient-rich botanical oils and butters that do more than simply sit on the surface.
Plants bring their own story.
Essential fatty acids.
Natural antioxidants.
Vitamins.
Compounds that have supported skin for generations.
We believe nourishment should come with every application.
Artificial Colorants
Your skincare doesn’t need to be bright blue to be effective.
It doesn’t need glitter. Or neon pink.
The colors you’ll find in our products come from the botanicals themselves.
Sometimes that means each batch looks ever so slightly different.
We think that’s beautiful.
Nature was never meant to be identical.
Unnecessary Fillers
Every ingredient should earn its place.
If an ingredient isn’t supporting the stability, texture, performance, or experience of the product, we ask a simple question:
Why is it there?
We’d rather create formulas with fewer, purposeful ingredients than longer ingredient lists designed to impress.
Sometimes less really is more.
Why This Matters for Intimate Skin
The skin throughout the body isn’t all the same.
Intimate skin is delicate, highly absorbent, and deserves the same thoughtful care we give our face.

What We Choose Instead
Choosing what to leave out is only half the story.

Herbal extracts selected with purpose.
Essential oils used thoughtfully, never simply for fragrance.
